The unique format of the debate challenged speakers to imagine themselves aboard a rapidly descending hot air balloon. Only one person could remain in the basket to save it from crashing, and each participant had five minutes to convince the audience that their expertise was the most vital for the planet’s future. It was a dynamic, thought-provoking event that put sustainability issues into sharp focus, and I was honoured to represent clean technology.
As the founder of Heüvel, a digital agency committed to sustainable practices in the hospitality industry, my mission is to address the often-overlooked environmental impact of digital infrastructure. My speech highlighted a pressing yet intangible issue: the environmental cost of the digital systems that underpin our modern world. Websites, booking platforms, payment gateways, and data centres – all essential to today’s hospitality operations – consume vast amounts of energy and contribute to global carbon emissions.
Currently, digital infrastructure accounts for 3% of global electricity consumption, a figure on par with the airline industry. What’s even more alarming is the projection that this could surge to 14% by 2040. This is a challenge we cannot afford to ignore, especially in an industry as tech-reliant as hospitality. From digital booking systems to the growing demand for contactless technologies post-pandemic, the sector’s reliance on digital solutions is only increasing.
At Heüvel, we’re taking a proactive approach to combat this challenge by ensuring our digital services are powered by 100% renewable energy. One of the key messages I aimed to convey during the debate was the importance of aligning digital sustainability with physical sustainability. Many hospitality businesses proudly display their eco-credentials, from using locally sourced produce to implementing waste reduction strategies. Yet, these same businesses often overlook their digital operations, which are among their most significant energy consumers.
By addressing this oversight, hospitality leaders can ensure that their sustainability efforts are holistic and consistent. It’s about more than just reducing energy consumption; it’s about reflecting integrity and transparency in every aspect of their business. As digital leaders in a rapidly evolving industry, hoteliers have an opportunity to lead by example and inspire change on a global scale.
The Big Green Balloon Debate wasn’t just an opportunity to share insights, it was a platform to challenge industry leaders to think differently about sustainability. While the debate crowned Amanda Bronkhorst of Just One Tree as its winner, the event underscored that every area of expertise represented is vital to creating a sustainable future. From waste management to regenerative agriculture, the hospitality industry has countless avenues to make a positive impact.
My message to the audience was clear: the digital industry’s environmental footprint is vast, but it’s also an area where meaningful change can happen quickly. By demanding more from digital providers, choosing energy-efficient solutions, and optimising digital operations, we can turn a significant environmental challenge into an opportunity for innovation and leadership.
The feedback from the event was overwhelmingly positive, and it reaffirmed my belief that the hospitality industry is ready to embrace digital sustainability.
